Athens, 22 May 2015

Attack against a trans woman with a shotgun in the center of Athens.

The Greek Transgender Support Association (G.T.S.A.), a recognized ngo for the support of the rights of the trans* community, denounces the attack against a trans woman with a shotgun in the center of Athens.

More specifically, during the early hours (between 6:00 – 6:10 in the morning) of Thursday May 21, 2015, in the area near Larissa Railway Station and close to the Traffic Police Directorate of Attica and the offices of Golden Dawn; an unknown man of substantial build, aged 35-40 years old, insulted a trans woman, calling her a “tranny” when he realized that she actually was a transgender person. The trans woman answered back defending her dignity, and from then on everything rolled up so quickly that she could not even be aware that the unknown man was holding a gun, possibly a hunting gun, and that he was shooting her in the legs, thighs and around the genitals area.

The terrified and bleeding trans woman succeeded to reach the entrance of the Traffic Police Directorate where a female officer tried to bring her round offering her a glass of water and some medical assistance, and immediately called an ambulance. According to the trans woman, the behavior of the officers was highly exemplary.

The woman was brought to the surgical clinic of the Central Hospital of Athens, where her wounds were attended and cleaned up and the shot pellets were removed, and now she is hospitalized. Representatives of the G.T.S.A. were rushed to the hospital, when informed of the attack, and the woman will stay in the hospital for as long as it takes and put under more medical examinations and CAT scans in order to determine if the shot fragments have been completely removed. At the same time, the trans woman gave a lodgment of a complaint to a police officer testifying exactly what happened during the attack.

The Greek Transgender Support Association (G.T.S.A.) is ringing the alarm bell and will take all necessary steps in order to combat hate crimes on the ground of gender identity, because the incidents of transphobic attacks are rapidly multiplying – a more recent incident happened some days ago in Evoia ( – and according to the Annual Report of Racist Violence Recording Network (Press_report2014, Report_2014eng), these incidents are of particular cruelty.
